Reddit user MentalRental asked /r/Cyberpunk what tech would be included in a modern-day version of the “R.U. a Cyberpunk?” magazine page. People suggested lots of cyberpunk gadgets, a few of which I didn’t know existed. Here’s a condensed list of the answers that various commenters threw into the ring — I tried to minimize redundancy and limit the list to portable devices:
- smartphone; someone proposed a jailbroken Android specifically (also “Android phone with hardware keyboard, SD slot, and external battery”)
- Samsung Gear VR headset
- RTL-SDR dongle (for example)
- external battery pack (there are many)
- electric moped (the name “hoverboard” won’t die)
- stungun flashlight
- TENS + EMS unit
- tDCS kit (very skeptical of this concept)
- pulse oximeter
- device running Kali Linux (hell yeah)
- Bluebox VPN device (or Annonabox)
- Dangerous Things NFC implant
- nootropic drugs (Modafinil is popular but lots of options exist)
- 3D-printed AR-15
- quadcopter (a light drone; someone suggested a DIY version with Raspberry Pi; also “$500 in FPV drone equipment, held together with duct tape”)
- external SSD
- a handful of input adapters
- DIY bacterial CRISPR kit
- modified HMD (for example a Vive with a Kinect attached)
- Faraday isolation bag
- briefcase PC with a high-end GPU and a crappy little LCD
- outdated laptop that no one else can figure out how to use — “tiled WM, terminals everywhere, trackpad disabled entirely”
- dashcam
- handheld projector
- bulky jacket with a hood and many pockets
- khaki pants (these ones specifically)
